The title would be more accurate if it was “SUV before the dog” but that would sound daft.
I’m spending a lot of time thinking about SUVs at the moment.
We are looking for a new place to live because we want more space and we want to get a dog. I have lived without a dog in my life for three years now and miss the walks, the cuddles and the happy greeting that you get every time you come home from work, tired and stressed.
If we find a bigger home (and it will be hard to leave the view here – see attached) and get a dog (mid to large size – small dogs don’t count!!) then we will need a dog friendly car. A dog friendly car means different thins to different people, but right now, living in the good old US of A, it has to be an SUV. But which one ….
The first car that comes to mind is the BMW X5. Great to drive despite its size and they have been around long enough to be affordable. Last time I considered one it was ruled out because the trunk wasn’t really tall enough for my German Shepherd x Rottweiler, but this time I think I will be constrained to a retriever sized dog (by my first time dog owner wife) so the space will be fine.
The problem is that when I start looking at X5s my mind wanders to the underrated VW Touareg (not as sporty, but great quality) and then onto the New Ford Explorer. Should I spend a touch more than I planned and get a new explorer instead of a 5 year old BMW?
I really like the latest Grand Cherokee, but the 21mpg I would see on the highway puts me off. I used I have a 90s grand Cherokee and really liked it for cruising. It certainly wasn’t an x5 but I’m sure the new one is a lot closer and I’m a lot older…
But do I really need an SUV? I currently drive 100 miles every day. Surely I should get a BMW 5 series wagon? Or maybe my third Saab 9-5? Or how about Audi a5 and let the dog have the back seat….

Although that explorer that just passed did look very nice….
and I just watched Motorweek and they really like the Grand Cherokee…
