A dangerous way to spend a couple of hours…

At the weekend I waisted a couple of hours “window” shopping for cars. I’m not sure why, but I suddenly realised that I wasn’t seeing many used Porsche 911s of the vintage I like. I decided to use that wonderful tool we call Google and a few clicks later I was on http://www.autotraderclassics.com/

I started with Porsche 911 for under $25k. First up was a 1975 on 41k miles. I loved my ‘S’. It was an amazing car to drive and hard to believe that a car of that vintage could be so quick and yet so smooth. I drove mine from Neptune NJ to Williamsburg, VA for a weekend back in 2003. It was 380 miles each way of pure driving pleasure (apart from the A/C which decided to only work under acceleration!). With the windows down and a heavy throttle I still managed 35 mpg.

….. but I’ve had one of them, so next on the search was a 1988 on 152k miles, which would be a lot for most super cars, but 911s can run easily twice that if they are cared for and the 88 is the classic yuppie 911 that I grew up wanting.
Next a 1991 on 103k. Now I first fell in love with the 964 model at an autoshow in London when I was 17. Some friends and I had been rejected from all the major stands which were by invitation only (Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc..) but we waited until the end of the day and as the crowds began to thin, the Porsche guys took petty on
this small group of kids and let us on the stand. It was the first time I sat in a Carrera 2 and it sealed my love.
I think my next 911 will be a 964 Carrera 2 (unless I am doing incredible well and I can afford a 993…)
