Things were going well. I had been hired back by the company I had left in New Jersey, the ex was back as a Social Worker and we were enjoying cheap rent.
Working for the old company was great, it meant free quarterly trips back to New Jersey and my friends and my job required travel which meant I saw lots of Europe, particularly Finland and Sweden. (Two great places and I seriously recommend you go!).
The Audi was a lot of fun but was old and we needed something better for long distance dog drives and for when they got wet… which was a lot!
A budget was set and the selection was narrowed down…
…and the final short list was; a BMW 5 series Touring, Volvo 850 Estate, Saab 9-5 and Ford Focus. The Focus sounds like an outsider in this group, but I knew it meant I could buy a newer car and the Focus estate was the only car in this group with a boot that was 32″x32″x32″ – the exact interior dimensions of the Jeep’s boot (up to the spare tyre that was fitted inside).
So the search began…
The BMW was too small, no matter how hard I tried to convince myself, Volvo 850s only appealed with big engines and then they were too old and every Focus felt cheap after looking at premium cars. Then I found a Saab 9-5 SE. It was an automatic but in very nice condition, with leather and a/c (both very important with big stinky dogs) and 150bhp (which was important to me). Once again I was a Saab owner…
…and the boot was just about big enough (as long as Kirby ducked).
